Interview with Sayoko Shibuya at Saturday 23rd of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SS: Simple and minimal forms can be more complex to create than you imagine, and I was happy to challenge it to enhance its theme; air and water.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SS: This project has a lot of possibilities for lightings. It can be expanded to table lamps, wall lamps, floor lamps and any other type of lighting. Moreover, each acrylic will have slight difference in terms of texture on the surface as of its reactions with heat.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SS: It took quite long period, which is about 2-3 years, to test many different type of acrylics and enviroment.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SS: Light is an essential element in the real world, when I experimented a material, then I came up with the idea to express importance of fundamental elements in our life. I was fortunate enough to be selected to exhibit in Milan a few years ago, so I deceided to pursure this project to introduce my attempt.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SS: I am always fascinated with lightings and was interested in creating something which can change atmosphere of space. The lighting is perfect for it.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SS: This could be located in public such as hotels, restaurants and bars, but also installed on domestic situation, it would be for interior dsigners, architects, and distoributors etc.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SS: The colours we see are created by refraction of air, water and the sun. As you know that blue colour represents the colour of the sky and the sea, I named after it. Blue is also my favorite colour as well.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SS: It is produced with a huge industrial oven which is customised to have control the heat, and laser cutter to trim it, the polish the edges and placed the sheet into the wooden mould.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SS: it is definitely the surfece of the lamp. I was pleased to see people enjoying its texture and the lights through the surface. Another thing, some people thought it was soft material as it is organic shape, or even glass.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SS: It is always nice to have feedbacks to go to the next stage.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
