Interview with Omdesign at Tuesday 17th of May 2016 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? OC: Casa Ramos Pinto, which has been combining innovation with tradition in the production of Port wines since 1880, has surprised the market by launching this multi-functional packaging, created and produced by the Portuguese advertising agency Omdesign, for its iconic RP 10YO wine. This is highly innovative with two cork blocks and an outer sleeve of pressed cardboard that unites the two parts. It may be used afterwards for multiple purposes. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? OC: We were inspired by originality, simplicity and ambiental concerns to create a multi-functional and ecological packaging able to best perform its primary purpose while protecting the environment. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? OC: The project started in the beginning of April 2014 in Porto (Portugal) and finished in May 2015. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? OC: Reuse this packaging in an original and creative way is the challenge to consumers. It appeals to their creativity and encourages consumers to share the original ways they have found to reuse these two pieces of cork. This ensures that the packaging is not just used to transport and display the wine, but can also be reused in creative and innovative ways. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? OC: The packaging is 100% eco-friendly, complying with the environmental and sustainability concerns that Casa Ramos Pinto has made its policy. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? OC: It consists of two cork blocks and an outer sleeve of pressed cardboard that unites the two parts. Due to the unique properties of cork, a 100% natural and sustainable material (a very Portuguese product, as well as Port wine), such as lightness, impermeability and thermal insulation, this packaging may be used afterwards for multiple purposes, for example as a cooler, somewhere to keep your pocket contents, pen holder, jar or even a flower vase. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? OC: After some research to choose the best materials to use in this packaging, we conclude that cork was the right solution, not only to attend to the ambiental goals defined by the brand, due to its eco-friendly characteristics, but also in terms of design.
