Interview with Emrah Önemli at Sunday 24th of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
EO: To combine an outstanding styling with functionality, well balanced proportions and feasibility.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
EO: My fundamental aim in creating this design was to conceive something that would remain unaffected from design trends that emerge and shift through time and could grip peoples attention for years to come.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
EO: To see it on the water.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
EO: From Design sketches to final 3d renders it took almost 3 months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
EO: It started as an inspiration.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
EO: I plan to sell it.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
EO: No

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
EO: My potential clients for this design are, who is looking for being sophisticated and owning something timeless.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
EO: The owner oriented design successfully meets the privacy needs of its proprietor. Perhaps the most significant design element which enables the yacht to achieve this is the full-deck master cabin glasses that rise above as wings allowing a balcony to slide out from underneath the master cabin floor. This very feature lets the owner to get to the sea without any visual contact with a guest or member of crew, disembark the yacht with a tender and also indulge in splendid open air without leaving the master cabin.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
EO: Combining all satellite antennas into one bigger dome, provides tidier look and forms the characteristics of the Pearl 63.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
EO: After pencil sketches I used Sketchbook designer of illustration and for 3d phase I used Maya and keyshot.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
EO: Full length side windows of master cabin with vertical lift, provides spacious feeling and magnificent scenic views, also enables to have a balcony by lifting the windows up and sliding the ground platform out. This ground platform includes a gangway direct to the sea.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
EO: I was alone.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
EO: New material technologies are making this design feasible.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
EO: Although my design is incorporated up in a total of 63 meters she embodies an extraordinary set of proportions that can be attained on 80-100 meter yachts thanks to its entire main deck being embedded swiftly and smoothly into the hull.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
EO: One of my clients encouraged me.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
EO: I've learned not to use polygon modelling technique for sake of time anymore.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
