Interview with Kirin Leung at Sunday 24th of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
KL: Inspired by the company’s signature bra technique - the Miracle Wing, "The Wings" sculpture is a pair of flying wings transformed from a bra. The wings' form represent freedom, confidence and elegance which is something that Regina Miracle is trying to deliver to their customer through their product. The sculpture is made from stainless steel with perforated letter pattern taken out from the brand name Regina Miracle which is then bent and polished to form the magnificent sculpture piece.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
KL: The sculpture is designed especially for Regina Miracle International (Group) Ltd for their listing at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange ceremony. Regina Miracle is a leading global intimate wear company specialized in innovative intimate wear manufacturing. The project's challenge is to create a bra sculpture that can fully represent the company's philosophy in its grand listing ceremony.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
KL: We would like to design a series of similar technique sculptures in the coming future.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
KL: around 8 months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
KL: It was commissioned by our client International (Group) Ltd.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
KL: We are interested in sculpture art in the way that it provides us with more freedom and flexibility to design when compared with doing architecture. We could play with complex geometry and beautiful extreme forms where we dont really need to care too much on structures and cost.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
KL: We are interested in fluid form in nature, art or buildings. We certainty get inspiring from the world we living in.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
KL: Clients who were looking for tailor-made designer's art piece.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
KL: The double curvature plus the peroration details in uncommon in sculpture art. This is something that we are very proud of being able to achieve.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
KL: Inspired by the company’s signature bra technique - the Miracle Wing, "The Wings" sculpture is a pair of flying wings transformed from a bra. The wings' form represent freedom, confidence and elegance which is something that Regina Miracle is trying to deliver to their customer through their product.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
KL: We used 3d modelling, 3d printing, parametric design and our team's special handcraft skill.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
KL: The challenge of this artwork is to make the perforated stainless steel on a doubly cuvred surface with extreme curvatures and tiny perforated holes. The smallest perforation is of 3mm wide which requires special care when fabricating. The challenge was to ensure the desired curves of the sculpture can be achieved with the right thickness of stainless steel while being able to keep the delicate perforations.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
KL: Technology has definitely played an important role in our design. We used 3d modelling, 3d printing, parametric design and our team's special handcraft skill to produce this sculpture.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
KL: We always try to make unique design , from concept to realization. And because we always push the limit to extreme in our design, we have been facing a lot of challenges especially in the manufacturing stage. It takes us extra effort with new technology application to make our vision comes true.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
KL: Kirin & Koren is young multidisciplinary design group in Hong Kong. We would like to let our design known to a broader range of audience globally.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
KL: Definitely some of the fabrication limits in stainless steel sculpture.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
