Interview with gianpietro tonetti at Thursday 5th of March 2015 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? GT: The idea was to propose a piece of furniture that could fit into different environments with different living styles. The solution has been to propose the creation of two series of extruded aluminum profiles, one perfectly smooth and one with a relief that is inspired by Romanesque columns, using the same structural components. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? GT: The realization of a series of products consistent with the target reference and the corporate inputs. Products designed to last, easy to use, made using recyclable materials and eco-friends, which may be intended for an international market. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? GT: Promote the prize in social networks and on my website. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? GT: The design from the first concept, to final engineering, required approximately three months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? GT: There has been specifically requested by the DEXO a project, we work with them from several years. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? GT: The "ROMA collection" will be made and marketed by the company DEXO Orsenigo srl FS: What made you design this particular type of work? GT: Everything, from the first sketch to the realization of the executive file of each component FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? GT: Only our experience in the field FS: Who is the target customer for his design? GT: We believe a mature clientele over the age of 35 years, with high disposable income. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? GT: The ability to have a product suitable for both inside and outside, with the elements of extension made of the same material of the main floor. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? GT: Is inspired by the decorations of the Romanesque columns, a symbol of Italian style! FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? GT: Everything has been developed with 3D CAD systems and some components were prototyped with 3D printers FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? GT: The versatility and the proper use of materials FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? GT: Everything has been developed in our study with a continuous dialogue with customers. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? GT: Fundamental, we have created the structure with joints in die-cast aluminum and extruded aluminum profiles. All movements are on ball bearings. The plans and extension cords are made of ceramic supported by fiberglass and tempered glass. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? GT: We did not do specific research, only a general overview of the market. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? GT: Control of production costs, we had a target audience and we respected. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? GT: In order to have more visibility and look for new customers. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? GT: The comparison with the customer is always a source of growth FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? GT: Is everything to me!
