Interview with Junya Nakai at Monday 13th of August 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JN: When clothes are torn or worn out, usually we get rid of these clothes. However, predecessors did not. They cut clothes into small pieces their old wear out. Then, they made over a clothe again from the small parts. The spirit of taking good care of things is expressed in the design.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JN: The wisdom of the wise previous generation is a fountain for making good design. Old wisdom shouldn't throw away. It has still benefits.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JN: I want to think about the natural environment.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JN: Few weeks?

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JN: Designers can not move unless they receive an offer. The presentation is important.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JN: This question does not suit my work.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JN: I made this for spring & summer season.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JN: Obviously, about this work, I got influence from quite ordinary previous generation people.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JN: This works for the particular brand. So, the target is the brand's fans.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JN: It doesn't exist

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JN: I used the technique called " twisted by water". There is a very rare technique to make linen cloth with this way in Japan. Then, I have decided to use the word "Aqua".

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JN: I use a computer and some soft on the desk, but it is for only planning. When the project start, all things, and problems will happen on the field. Factory workers are doing the real work in the field. I need to talk to them and find the solution with them.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JN: Factory workers like to use the phrase like "fabric is alive". It means the data does not work. The natural fibers are so different depending by lot or situation. The workers have to adjust a machine depends on the situation. It looks so hard to work.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JN: I did this design by myself, but I needed some partners who have special skills to make.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JN: Textile makers have different types of weaving machines. It is important to choose the machine depends on the project.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JN: This question is not match with my works.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JN: Some weaving machines have regulations like use warp yarn up to four colous. I have tried to make how can I make dramatic fabric in the regulation.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JN: I would like to send a message through this work.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JN: I have learned about great Japanese handcraft again. Also, I got good progress by making over great old vision.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
JN: There is the word 温故知新(on ko chi shin). It means like "Learn from the past. Prepare for the future.". Old wise had great knowledge. We have to take over it.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
