Interview with Musa Çelik at Thursday 24th of July 2014

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
M: In online sales and home delivery food categories, most of the packages have one and only function; carrying the product. Contrary to this, it is targeted to make the box a component of customer experience.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
M: Enhancing after sale customer satisfaction and functionality are the most important aspects of this project.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
M: The design was prepared for a client and they achieved a significant brand awareness with it. It is planned to put this design in the center of their communication strategy and prepare its versions.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
M: About 6 months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
M: Ease of use and differentiaiting were important aspects for the projects. So, a concept is created inspired from tray and table mat figures.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
M: The design was prepared for a client. It has been produced and used since March, 2014.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
M: I inspired from tray and table mat figures.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
M: A lot of examples related to food packaging and different box designs were collected and examined. Thus, the design process was started with a detailed knowledge of the competitors and category. But there isn't any significant design and/or designer I was influenced.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
M: The end users of the design are mostly 25-45 ages old single workers who don't have time to cook for themselves.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
M: MealBox innovates online sales and home delivery categories in which almost all transfers are made by ordinary cartons. Its distinctive features provide ease of use and a stylish food presentation.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
M: We use the same name of the trademark for the design, MealBox. It is the best name explain the design.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
M: The box is designed to enable different usages. The part which contains food can be used as a tray or it is possible to use front cover as a table mat.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
M: I worked on my own during creative process. But, of course we were in close contact with the client and account executive of the project.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
M: Online research was conducted for the project. A lot of examples related to food packaging and different box designs were collected and examined. Latest trends in box design, absolute musts of food packaging, good and bad design examples, shortcomings of the category were all noted. Thus, the design process was started with a detailed knowledge of the competitors and category.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
M: The main challenges of the project are to reflect “modern and urban” image of trademark and prepare a design which can increase after sales satisfaction. Targets of the project are achieved with providing ease of use, a stylish food presentation, distinctive features and minimalist design.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
M: I am extremely aware of the importance of local and international competitions for a designer. MealBox is a project which I worked on carefully and with pleasure. It resulted in success and achieved a remarkable popularity in my country. Thus, I decided to submit it to an international design competition.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
M: In every project you take your experience a step forward and improve your design ability. MealBox opened up my horizon related to food packaging and box design.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
M: No, thank you.
