Interview with Charles W Wan at Wednesday 16th of April 2014 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? CW: The main principle of my design is to breakthrough the traditional house shape and incorporate modern architecture elements. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? CW: The idea was quite an impulsive thing, it was out of a need for a good friend who's dog was hurt and I think he deserve a nicer living environment. So that sparks me with an idea of making something out of the ordinary shape and material for dog housing. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? CW: La Maison Noire means the black house. It's made of carbon fibre and it's supposed to be black. As simple as that. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? CW: I did everything with a plain paper and pencil. It's a pure sketch design and then prototype with clay model. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? CW: I believe the most unique part is the use of carbon fibre material and incorporating LED lighting? I think the lighting brings out the design cue while carbon fibre is probably never used in these kind of product. It's worth the try and it came out quite nice. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? CW: This is my first time submitting my design to an international design competition and I'm very honoured for being awarded a winner. It gives me the confidence to keep going and be creative. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? CW: I guess I'd like to say that it's really true to believe in what you believe is right and just go do it without worrying too much. Be impulsive and be creative!
