Interview with Shen Qiang at Thursday 3rd of April 2014

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
QS: The concept of this design was inspired by a glass cup. The temporary living space just as a glass cup without the so-called "space border", but with many limitless possibilities. Just as "a glass of water," when it falls into the water, on the contrary it will get limitless possibilities. Putting different substances into the cup will have a new name, may be "a glass of milk, juice, beer" or others.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
QS: Located in Shikumen building in Jingan District, Shanghai, 1305-studio office is set to be the space of multi creative functions. The space acts not only for architecture, interior or graphic design, but also for lots of other purposes, fashion show, art exhibition, cocktail lounges, professional lectures, etc. With the interest of Shanghai Lane Culture, the architects tried to make this 300 qm2 space into a harmonious combination of tradition and modern. The result turns out not a bad attempt, uh? The language of the space is the box. Boxes lying around, either piled up or separated freely, and it makes the space of unlimited possibilities. People in the space can easily find a way to adapt and communicate properly, and share the joys with others.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
QS: Hope I can make a lot of people accept the design of the concept, understanding and communication, also hope that my design of these furniture can be turned into product sales.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
QS: Six months

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
QS: he wooden box made of oak has storage capabilities.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
QS: Because rent this space time is not long, the area is not large also. Want to design a kind of can according to demand the repeated use of space, there are a lot of inspiration for the use of space, but the area is so big, so with such a design concept, in order to this concept, storage tank is divided into units, bookcases were divided into unit, convenience a person can move change become the space of imagination, after the splitting of the unit can continue to use after the next move, and new space combination according to different space

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
QS: Don't have enough money

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
QS: Teng kun yen

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
QS: myself

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
QS: The temporary living space just as a glass cup without the so-called "space border", but with many limitless possibilities. Just as "a glass of water," when it falls into the water, on the contrary it will get limitless possibilities. Work Space Work space is just Like a cup of water, when we work in this "glass ", we can see the so-called desks, file cabinets, etc. But for both the desk and file cabinets, designers designed space accurately, so that it could free combine, to meet the demands over the next five years or even 10 years later. The change could enable the office space with 2 people increase to 30 people. Party Space Parties are often held together by designers. Every weekend, the office space becomes an entirely different place. It may use the front desk into a cool DJ counter, or a counter with all kinds of drinks, 7 meter-long Screen shows various psychedelic images. T station Designers design T station with wooden box. At weekends, people can together with friends hold a small fashion show. Art exhibition At weekends, when the office space is no longer a working space, but turns into an exhibition hall or an art exhibition. It may also be a furniture exhibition or a building model’s exhibition, etc. The library when all the bookshelves are folded, it will turns into small library. Of course it is luxurious to design a library in the 360qm2 space, but designers can create the space. And when the designers stay in this kind of space, they can realize the library's dream in his office. speech Two white wooden supports of different modulus can turn into a speech sitting stool. It could meet a small speech with about 50-100 people. That can also be called as a designer’s platform, where designers can exchange their experience and satisfy their vanity.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
QS: Wooden box is the element of the design

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
QS: Model

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
QS: My wife Cheng cheng Feng

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
QS: The accurate size enables the space to show different functions

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
QS: The heights of them are 15cm and 30cm. They can free combine and superpose. They could be superimposed to 45cm, 60cm, 75cm or 90cm and so on. The open direction of the wooden door both considering spatial variability, also considering the privacy. The shelves could be divided into units with a width of 15cm and 30cm, stagger superposed, to increase the stability, in the meanwhile, it could be used as both the display platform but also the benches. It could also used as bars or desks.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
QS: In the 300 - square - meter area meet the use function of 3000 square meters
