Interview with Dario Scapitta at Sunday 13th of April 2014

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
DS: I was inspired by ruffs, ancient neck decorations that you can see on many beautiful paintings of the XVI and XVII century. Some of them were amazing and huge, a kind of accessory architectures.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
DS: I was thinking to simplify the typical ruffs style trying to make it modern and contemporary. Also very important was to think about what kind of material to use and which kind of procedure to use to produce this pieces.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
DS: Promote and show out this design during fashion events or exhibitions. Also showing/selling this items into high fashion stores that might be interested on.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
DS: A month, starting from the main idea and then defining and develop the concept.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
DS: I've decided to pursuit an inspirations. When a suggestion is blinking on my mind, I'm starting to elaborate a form, a concept until it will be a wearable object.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
DS: Purely inspiration and imagination.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
DS: People who love fashion "avantgrde" items. People that are looking for something very particular, not obvious. People who WANT to wear this design.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
DS: Certainly its design and style, but also the production procedure.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
DS: Because the first thing I though was "extravagant", this is why the name EXTRAVAGANZA

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
DS: Pencil and paper for the concept, then a computer and a 3D CAD software to modelling the project.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
DS: Its pure and elegant design.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
DS: The development is all mine but I have been able to count on the great experience with the 3D printing technology of the "i.materialise" team.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
DS: Technology has actually the main role in this design. This design is modelled using a 3d software and is made using 3d printing, the second industrial and technology revolution.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
DS: Not exactly, my research was based on ancient painting and different kind of body ornaments used ages ago.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
DS: Try to simplify the style of ruffs and then find the best materials in which it has to be printed.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
