Interview with Despina Souhlas at Monday 4th of March 2013 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? DS: The design was inspired by the curve of the grand piano and the way people are drawn to this instrument. We wanted to design a piece that would provide the listeners a place to comfortably sit and experience the music from a proximity they are rarely afforded. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? DS: We wanted to provide seating near the piano without crowding the area around it, it had to be comfortable seating that complimented the contours of the piano. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? DS: To see this sofa nestled adjacent to every grand or baby grand piano in every lounge or home and offer the listeners a relaxing seat where they may be fully embraced by the melodies. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? DS: The concept was fully developed in one afternoon. The details took about 10 days to develop. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? DS: We needed to provide a client with additional seating for a space that had a baby grand piano. We did not find much on the market that fit well near the piano so we decided to design something instead. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? DS: We have worked with a local manufacturer to produce two sofas. The design is patented and we would be interested in leasing the production rights. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? DS: Necessity FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? DS: This sofa is one of a collection of our designs inspired by osmosis. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? DS: Anyone with a grand or baby grand piano that wishes to encourage socialization around it. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? DS: We are not familiar with any other similar concepts. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? DS: It's shape. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? DS: We consulted with musicians, composers and furniture builders.
