Interview with Kiky Lee Ching Yee at Monday 11th of March 2013 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? CL: Every time before doing my design, I will spend few days in understand the concept of the project. First impression is very important for me, if the design can't make surprise for me and it would not happen to audience too. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? CL: Attract people surrounding to find out the things happening inside the cube and paying attention to ongoing show in Television. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? CL: Guideline to achieve better result in future. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? CL: I have spent 1 week time in exploring the whole show concept/ idea and the achievement client wanted through audience. 1 week to survey the material and technical drawing. 1week to construct, and 1 day setup at venue. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? CL: Inspiration through client/program requirement. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? CL: This design is specially for "Battleground" program that have broadcast in ASTRO, Malaysia. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? CL: Base on the program/client needs. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? CL: Joke box that have influence me doing this design FS: Who is the target customer for his design? CL: Audience from age 3-80 FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? CL: The material and the Function of the design FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? CL: “Thinking out of the box” which bring the meaning of think differently unconventionally or from a new perspective FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? CL: Sketchup and AutoDesk FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? CL: Built a giant metal cube at center of shopping malls. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? CL: Set contractor/buidler. Yes from the construction part. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? CL: attention for every audience. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? CL: When doing this design i have to include wheatear survey(as Malaysia is a rain forest country). Materials have to be waterproof. Must be cold and bright enough for contestant who having competition inside. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? CL: i having some technical issued during the design, as the venue is small and limitation on the design weight. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? CL: my supervisor have advised me to summit this design for competition. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? CL: i have more techincal knowledge in construction. And i know that nothing is impossible when you really wanted to make it happen.
