Interview with Fabrizio Constanza at Sunday 17th of February 2013 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? FC: Seems like all office products have being evolving but the coat stand. My wife Claudia, is an Interior Designer and she asked me where could she find a nice coat stand, then I researched and did not find anything. That is where it started. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? FC: After plenty of research, my conclusion was that coat stands lack personality and aesthetic qualities. The Coat stand is a focal piece in an office as it is a desk and a chair, so it has to be appealing. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? FC: So far I make them and sale them, But I would like to see a furniture company produce it and market it. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? FC: This is such an interesting question, every time I hear it, my brain always think: “hhhmmm time since the idea was bouncing on my head or since I finally began sketching. For me design is like when kids play. It is hard to define time. What I can say is that from my initial notes to the first sale it took around 6 months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? FC: I design this particular concept because, as an independent designer, I found the need for this product in the market, I need to pay the bills and I knew it would sale well. So far so good. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? FC: It would be nice to lease it to another company, also develop design 2 and 3. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? FC: Really the other coat stands in the market are horrible. Do a fast image search in google. I have many corporate friends who wear blazers. They hate the regular four stick-hander-key cup stand. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? FC: I guess there are. When I at the begging of a project, I always look for cars. For this project I had on my screen saver a 1957 Black Ferrari Testa Rossa, and a Yellow Lamborghini LP40. The first Lande is yellow Lamborghini. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? FC: The corporate world, Image is a very important issue in the corporate world, this product is an asset. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? FC: This product was designed having in mind the end user and the environment around it. It is for office use. Once a client bargaining the price ask me: “hey but is missing the keychain holder and the pants holder? I answer her: well I guess the keys can be on top of the desk or the blazer pocket, hhmmmm about the pants?? Come on is for the office. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? FC: My Dad, his friends and family call him Lande. he always wear suits and blazer, so Its my way to say thanks dad for everything. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? FC: Lots of Sketching, scanner, CorelDraw, model making, carpenter, Autocad. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? FC: the Curves FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? FC: The people who helped me in the project were an Assistant designer and the computer drafter. Then it’s all about meeting with the manufacturers that also do the prototypes. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? FC: This product was designed to be mass produce easily, its parts can be CNC machined or molded. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? FC: Yes, for this product I did a lot of research on the product out there in the market. I realized there was not a specific corporate coat stand. I analyzed the corporate culture to understand what moves them, then the solution just flow. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? FC: Try to make the hanger disappear and keep it functional, leveling the hanger, reinforcing the weak points. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? FC: I knew it was unique, and has Italian curves FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? FC: Stay close to production
