Interview with Edvardas Kavarskas at Sunday 3rd of March 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
EK: The main source of inspiration was handmade fonts. We wanted to discover and showcase the typography that is cozy, intimate and individual.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
EK: During the creation of package design we tried to create homelike and modern design, attractive to youthful customers looking for new tastes and appreciating natural and healthy lifestyle. The core of design package became the game of typography and vivacious stories of ingredients supplemented with interesting graphical elements and bright colors. Besides the major packages the secondary package for the products was designed and approved. Furthermore, a paper cup for tasting of gourmet food in shops, wine-bars, restaurants and culinary studios was designed.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
EK: We will certainly promote the fact in Lithuania. Btw, last year bread sticks with rosemary were awarded a golden medal at Lithuanian Product of the Year competition.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
EK: Two months passed from the concept and first sketch creation to the final print-ready files.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
EK: Yes, it has already been produced by Birzu duona. The product appeared on the shelves of Lithuanian retail stores in September 2012.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
EK: Following the oldest bread baking traditions Birzu duona is always looking for innovative decisions and reacts to market changes – when bread sticks (It. grissini) became a popular snack in Lithuania, the bread stick line was introduced to the customers.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
EK: No

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
EK: Young people who are open minded and want to discover new tastes.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
EK: Whereas grissini was not so familiar type of bread to Lituanian market, the main goal of grissini marketing campaign was to show that these long, crispy bread sticks could be not only a perfect snack while enjoying a glass of wine or beer, but they also could be a lovely accompaniment to any soup, salad, cheese plate instead of traditional bread.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
EK: Grissini - its just indicating type of the product.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
EK: Project photos was made by talented food photographer Robertas Daskevicius. Photo session style was supervised by famous Lithuanian gastronomic project Kitchen mythbusters.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
EK: I received the call for entries e-mail.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
