Interview with Rafael Hintersteiner at Sunday 22nd of April 2012

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
RH: I wanted to create a room which is open for everyone at anytime.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
RH: I hope that many people will visit the chapel and find a place where they can pray.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
RH: The first imput was in 2008 and last year in October the building was finished.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
RH: The idea to design a chapel was born during a trip in Umbria/Italy where I visited Assisi, the hometown of Saint Francis.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
RH: First I studied the life of Saint Francis. What was important for him and then I tried to translate this into my design.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
RH: I don't know. For me it was important to create a room where Saint Francis could work.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
RH: I was working with models all the time cause there I could see the proportions best.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
RH: Hmm... I had the chance to visit Assisi. I knew, how the life of Saint Francis look like. This was an important moment.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
RH: I had a professor at University who helped me with technical answers. He is really a great person.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
RH: I served apprenticeship as a joiner at my parents company and at school in Hallstatt. I see architecture from the eyes of a joiner.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
RH: I had clear ideas for all the details of the chapel. Sometimes it was not easy to convince professionals but I always tried to give my best, successfully.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
RH: My friends told me that I should have a try and I thought, why not?

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
RH: I made a lot of mistakes, but I always tried to see it positive - so I was able to improve.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
RH:

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
