Interview with Vyara Zlatilova at Wednesday 18th of April 2012

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
VZ: Consumerism

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
VZ: I was experimenting in trying to recreate my personal interests, group membership and social standing based on the products I've recently consumed.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
VZ: I will try to develop further the idea and try to desseminate the edition, probably by mail, to unknown readers who I will ask for assumptions about the personality of the receipts owner (without telling them that's me).

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
VZ: It took me 3 months of research to develop the concept.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
VZ: It was an university project. We were asked to design a conceptual artist's multiple.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
VZ: My design is not commercially made. It is intended to be a piece of art.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
VZ: My interest in artist's books.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
VZ: I was influenced by Ed Ruscha's editions, along with many more book artists, who use everyday objects in different contexts.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
VZ: Everybody, there's no particular target.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
VZ: It's so simple, jet the psychological idea behind it is very deep and complex.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
VZ: It is a diary of me as an unkown consumer - The consumer's diary - simple as that.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
VZ: My design doesn't require any specific software or design tools, I used basic scanning and layout software.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
VZ: That it is trying to capture an identity by using something so simple as the reciept. It is a very simple, yet full of complexity and personality design.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
VZ: Everything apart from the actual printing is done by me.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
VZ: There's a technology role to some extend because nowadays we are able to keep track of everything we have ever bought or done, including the exact timing of the events. Having that in mind, one may say that we are even able to examine how our personailities evolve using everyday technologies. That is exactly what my project is about.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
VZ: It is relating on analytical data 100%.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
VZ: I was warried that the idea might be too simple for people to appreciate. But I am happy that I trusted my gut and left it simple, because as we all know somethimes less is more.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
VZ: It is important for less experienced designers to try in such competitions. I believe it is a way to improve what I do and receive important feedback, which will help me improve my future designs.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
VZ: I learned that I have to follow my own instincts and do what I think is right.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
