Interview with SUN JIAN at Tuesday 21st of May 2024 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JS: Our design integrates the legend of Huan Xiong from the Three Kingdoms, featuring intricately carved packaging and high-footed cups that reflect history and luxury. Using eco-friendly walnut wood materials, we emphasize sustainability and health benefits. This yuzu wine, commemorating thirty years of cultural exchange in Gaoxing County, showcases regional characteristics while blending modern fashion with traditional culture, aiming to provide consumers with a rich cultural experience and emotional connection. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JS: My main focus in designing this piece is to combine historical culture with modern fashion, showcasing the legend of Huan Xiong from the Three Kingdoms with intricate packaging and high-quality materials that exude luxury. Additionally, I emphasize eco-friendliness and health benefits. Through this yuzu wine, I aim to commemorate thirty years of cultural exchange in Gaoxing County, highlight regional characteristics, attract fashionable consumers, and provide them with a rich cultural experience and emotional connection. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JS: For this award-winning design, my future plans include further promoting and enhancing brand awareness through multi-channel marketing and cross-industry collaborations to expand market impact. I also aim to continuously optimize the product design by incorporating more cultural elements and innovative concepts, launching limited and special editions to meet diverse consumer needs, deepen the cultural experience, and strengthen the brand's lasting appeal. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JS: I spent six months designing this special concept. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JS: I designed this special concept to blend historical culture with modern fashion, commemorating thirty years of cultural exchange in Gaoxing County and showcasing local characteristics and cultural heritage. This design was commissioned, but I also actively sought inspiration throughout the process, integrating Three Kingdoms stories with intricate design to create a unique and meaningful piece. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JS: I plan to offer my design to other companies for production or use. This will allow more people to appreciate my work while providing companies with a unique and attractive product or service. I believe this approach can maximize the market potential of the design and promote cultural dissemination and brand development. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JS: What inspired me to design this special type of work is my passion for historical culture and my interest in modern design. I aim to create products that combine traditional and contemporary elements, offering both cultural depth and a sense of fashion. This design not only conveys rich historical stories but also meets the modern consumer's desire for uniqueness and quality. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JS: When designing this piece, I was influenced by many other designs and designers. Their works inspired my understanding of aesthetics, material choices, and storytelling. I also actively engage in design communities and industry events, exchanging ideas and sharing inspiration with other designers, which further enriches my design perspective and creative approach. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JS: The target customers for this design are those who are interested in historical culture, value quality, and uniqueness, particularly the younger, fashion-conscious demographic. They may seek modern products that incorporate traditional culture while also appreciating the artistic and storytelling aspects of the product. This product aims to attract individuals who wish to experience culture and emotional connections through consumer goods. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JS: Compared to other similar or related concepts, this design stands out due to its cultural background and narrative. By delving deeply into the legends of the Three Kingdoms and integrating them into the product design, it possesses a unique historical and cultural significance. Additionally, the use of eco-friendly materials, emphasis on health benefits, and integration with local culture and commemorative events distinguish this design from others. Overall, it aims to provide a unique cultural experience while emphasizing modern fashion and sustainable values. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JS: The selection of a design name is typically a creative process, considering the theme of the design, the source of inspiration, and the emotions and feelings one wishes to convey. For this design, I might choose a name related to the Three Kingdoms period or the legend of Huan Xiong to highlight the historical and cultural background of the product. I might also consider using terms related to yuzu wine or local characteristics to emphasize the quality and regional aspect of the product. Ultimately, I would select a name that is concise yet expressive, making it easy for consumers to remember and understand its significance. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JS: In this project, I used a variety of design tools to achieve comprehensive product design and presentation. These include computer-aided design software for digital modeling and design, graphic design software for packaging and branding design, as well as 3D modeling software and rendering tools for creating three-dimensional models and renders of the product. Additionally, I relied on pen and paper for rapid sketching and conceptualization, while also using document and presentation software to create project documentation, reports, and presentations for effective communication and collaboration with team members and clients. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JS: The most unique aspect of my design is its cultural fusion and storytelling. By blending legendary tales from the Three Kingdoms period with modern design, I've created a product that is both historically significant and contemporary. This design not only conveys rich historical narratives but also incorporates unique cultural elements, setting it apart. Additionally, I prioritize environmental sustainability and health benefits, which also contribute to the uniqueness of this design. Overall, what makes my design truly unique is its integration of various elements, combining historical heritage with modern innovation, appealing to a broad audience. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JS: When designing this project, I might collaborate with professionals from various fields, especially those with technical and specialized skills. This could include engineers, materials experts, and more. Their expertise and skills can provide valuable assistance in different aspects of the project, such as structural design of the product, selection of packaging materials, optimization of production processes, and so on. Collaborating with professionals ensures the practical feasibility and market suitability of the design, enhancing the overall quality and efficiency of the project. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JS: In this particular design, technology plays a crucial role in multiple aspects. Firstly, it facilitates the product design process where computer-aided design software (CAD) and 3D modeling tools allow for the creation of precise product models and virtual testing and optimization. Secondly, it is integral to the manufacturing process, enabling efficient and high-quality production through advanced production equipment and processes. Additionally, technology is employed in packaging design and production to ensure alignment with the product design and adequate protection. Finally, it aids in marketing and sales by leveraging digital marketing and e-commerce platforms to reach a wider audience. Overall, technology drives innovation, enhances efficiency, ensures quality, and expands the market influence of the design. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JS: During the design process, I may be influenced by data and analytical research. This research could cover market surveys, consumer trends, competitive analysis, as well as technical assessments of materials and production processes. Market surveys and consumer trend analysis help me understand the needs and preferences of the target market, guiding product design and positioning. Competitive analysis helps me understand the characteristics and competitive advantages of similar products in the market, providing inspiration and reference for design. Additionally, technical assessments help me choose the most suitable materials and production processes to ensure product quality and feasibility. Overall, data and analytical research play an important guiding role in various aspects of the design process, helping me make more informed and effective decisions. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JS: During the process of designing and implementing concepts, I may encounter various challenges. These challenges include balancing cultural fusion, selecting appropriate materials and techniques, ensuring products meet market demands, addressing technical limitations, and fostering effective teamwork. Overcoming these challenges requires patience, creativity, and adaptability, but they are also integral parts of the design process, contributing to the advancement and enhancement of design. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JS: Deciding to submit my design to an international design competition is typically based on several considerations. Firstly, I assess whether my design aligns with the competition's theme and requirements, as well as the reputation and prominence of the competition. If my design closely relates to the competition's theme and the competition has a strong reputation, I may consider submitting. Secondly, I consider the competition's awards and prizes, as well as the chances of winning and the recognition that comes with winning. If the competition offers attractive awards and prizes, and I believe my design is competitive, I may decide to submit. Lastly, I also consider the competition's deadlines and submission requirements to ensure I have enough time to prepare and submit my design. After considering these factors, I decide whether to submit my design to the international design competition. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JS: In the process of designing this piece, I learned many valuable lessons and continuously improved myself through practice and reflection. Firstly, I gained a better understanding and appreciation of traditional culture and how to incorporate traditional elements into modern design. This not only expanded my design perspective but also increased my awareness of history and culture. Secondly, I learned to pay more attention to detail and quality to ensure the integrity and feasibility of the design. Through collaboration with professionals, I also learned how to communicate effectively and collaborate, as well as how to benefit from their expertise and experience. Lastly, I learned how to adapt to challenges and learn from failures and mistakes to continuously improve my design skills. Overall, this project provided me with a valuable learning opportunity, helping me grow into a more well-rounded and mature designer. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? JS: ChatGPT In addition to the points mentioned above, I also want to emphasize the importance of continuous learning and innovation in the design process. Throughout this project, I continuously explored new design concepts and techniques to seek better solutions and creativity. I also experimented with different design approaches and tools to broaden my design perspective and enhance my abilities. Furthermore, I actively sought feedback and advice, engaged in discussions with peers, and shared experiences to continually improve and refine my designs. Overall, my design process is a journey of continuous learning and advancement, and I will continue to maintain curiosity and a thirst for knowledge to further elevate my design skills.
