Interview with Janne Halttu at Monday 15th of May 2023

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JH: Functionality, simplicity and elegance. No Compromises.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JH: A real need in the market. In my work, I constantly encounter customers who cannot decide on the temperature of the lighting. There were different closed ecosystems on the market that are not very reliable in my experience and the range is limited. I wanted to solve the problem by offering a practical product family that does not tie the customer to a particular system and does not compromise on quality in the design of the light.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JH: Looking for partners in whole EU area.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JH: 1 year total. Few iterations.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JH: I wanted to do this make best possible product for every possible case. No matter if its regular household or office, no matter if its directly for customer or thru designer

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JH: We produce it and we are happy to sell it to anyone.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JH: True interest in lighting design

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JH: Only our factory engineer that had to find me perfect components i requested.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JH: Anyone who builds or renovates. This is perfect for all interior designers and lighting designers.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JH: True possibility to choose any lighting control system.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JH: TUNNELMA is Finnish word that translates "Mood". So you can create your own mood.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JH: Windows Paint, pencil and paper.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JH: Functionality

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JH: Only manufacturing factory engineer to source components I needed.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JH: Huge. Its all about making technology to serve user. Its not required (BASIC delivery) but to make full use of these lights you should use Lighting control system. Such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, DALI2, etc..

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JH: Years of making lighting designs for households. Always same questions. "What colour temperature should I use?"

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JH: We are small company, so to mass produce it, bigger orders were mandatory.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JH: I got requested.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JH: I had to think and came to realise that I actually made good product!!

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
JH: We will continue to develop and hopefully find our products in other countries than Finland.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
