Interview with SUN JIAN at Thursday 8th of June 2023

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JS: The main principle of this design lies in the fashionable present and the traditional elements of Korea.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JS: I am concerned about the future development of design and the environmental protection and the final expression of the design concept of such a production.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JS: In the future, we will probably invest more in the design and development of this fast drug.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JS: I spend some time researching the market, the site and the quality of the product before I design it, digging into the culture and then designing the packaging.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JS: Through the understanding of Korean traditional culture, the design of Korean clothing is linked to the design of the outer packaging to create a new design experience.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JS: The design is still in communication and not yet available then there is no collaboration yet

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JS: My grandmother was a teacher when I was very young and she taught me how to write and draw from an early age.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JS: I remember the first time I went to a shopping mall to buy a drink when I was young and I felt very strongly about it because in shopping malls people ignored the design of the packaging at that time and only cared about the product, so I think there should be better and more trusting packaging to attract people.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JS: The childish drink is suitable for people of all ages because it also contains adult vitamin C, which brings health to people.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JS: Many packaging designs are more concerned with the aesthetics of the product and the pigmentation of the product itself, and my design is more about giving it a culture that gives it some tradition.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JS: A brand is clearly more about being memorable so childish drinks are a very visual representation of the product's identity.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JS: I think the most important thing is the idea.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JS: I think it might have something to do with my upbringing and my experiences.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JS: I do all my own design

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JS: Because the whole package is designed for aluminium cans, there are some printing difficulties that may need to be considered in relation to the printing characteristics of this material.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JS: From the level of research, the main focus is on the combination of traditional culture and modern design, how to link traditional culture with modern design and art and life through the intangible heritage heritage of such a way to combine the ancient methods with the current methods, so that the research can better inherit the history and culture and promote the development of innovative modern design.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JS: Many times there is a disconnect between the designer and production and post-production process because I have long been in close contact with the design and production factories, so you will have a good communication before the product is launched to minimise the problems that exist.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JS: I have achieved excellent results in many international competitions at Fishnet, and every time I design a piece I hope it will be recognized by the industry.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JS: Each project is a brand new process in which you will encounter many problems that are fine to solve these problems are a learning process when you have more challenges you will have some experience will better help yourself to improve.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
JS: No

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
