Interview with Deyin Zhang at Saturday 11th of January 2025 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? DZ: My design mainly comes from the real needs of users. Many non-native Chinese speakers have told me that learning Chinese is difficult. Therefore, I had the inspiration to design this work FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? DZ: The focus is on helping non-native Chinese speakers quickly master Chinese grammar knowledge and Chinese culture. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? DZ: My plan is to promote it well and let more people discover this design. I am very grateful for the support and assistance provided by Design A, especially in terms of promotion and publicity. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? DZ: About a year. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? DZ: It was my own inspiration, no one commissioned me to do this design. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? DZ: The ownership of my design comes from me personally and does not belong to the design company. As of now, this design has not been sold or leased for production rights. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? DZ: I think it was because I wanted to solve this practical problem, and this driving force inspired me to design this design. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? DZ: My master's and doctoral supervisor, Luo Shijian, are legendary figures in my heart. He designed various aspects, such as the famous seats in China and the exercise system for astronauts. In addition, he is also a very famous design scholar. Every time I communicate with Professor Luo Shijian, it inspires me a lot. He is my idol. He has had a significant impact on my design. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? DZ: It includes many types of users, all of whom are its target users. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? DZ: The innovation of this design lies in the use of design cards to learn Chinese, and the continuous use of colors to reflect proficiency in different men. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? DZ: This is a very direct name, CHINESECHAIN is the meaning of the Chinese link FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? DZ: Digital design tools such as Figma and Illustrator, as well as paper prototyping tools. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? DZ: The most unique feature is that it meets the real needs of non-native Chinese learners. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? DZ: I worked with other designers to complete this design. They were my former classmates. I have collaborated with professional designers before. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? DZ: Technology is a form of support, but it is not the most important part. Digging into users' real needs is one of the most important aspects of this design. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? DZ: yes. We obtained real user data through research and used this data to assist our design. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? DZ: The entire design process was completed relatively smoothly without encountering any special challenges. I encountered some minor communication frictions in the collaborative design, but that wasn't considered a challenge. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? DZ: I have chosen the most famous design competition in the world - the A Design Award. This is a decision recognized by all members of our team. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? DZ: Learned about teamwork and how to allocate design tasks. This has enhanced my design management skills. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? DZ: No more.
