Purnu Jar by Sini Majuri

Home > Winners > Design #140698 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Sini Majuri (SM) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Sini Majuri by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Purnu here.

Interview with Sini Majuri at Monday 16th of May 2022

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SM: Purnu collection is inspired by marshmallows and pop culture. The design philosophy of the object is to reflect the Northern aesthetics with playful colors and simplified shape. The concept of the design is to flirt poetic glass medium.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SM: Studio made Purnu collection is hand shaped from mouth blown glass. The jar is suitable for food, but it is also beautiful with nothing at all in it. Unique hand shaped object fits well in every interior. Every object has their own breath. It’s a methaphor for a soul of a piece that makes it more than mere interior object. Purnu is designed to create harmonious moments into everyday life. When the tall jar is opened, it takes time and calmness to place items, such as flowers or food inside it to be preserved. These moments of serenity are rare and valuable in a hectic World.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SM: Preserving is the main idea of the object. Preserving the craftmanship, medium and the preserving as the function. The starting point of the design process is to use studio made glass as the medium of the design, because the endangered tradition of glass making is being applied to the Unesco’s World heritage lit. Using glass as a medium the designer takes action in preserving the ancient craftsmanship.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SM: The challenge in the process is to find the perfect flow for the colors, so that the appearance is remains fresh. A simplified shape can become multi-dimensional in glass medium. There is the visual layer of glass, how does the glass reflect, how will the colors look in different light. Above all there are also the historical layers of glass, the origin of Finnish glass making and the rare knowledge behind the craftsmanship.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
