Interview with Arvin Maleki at Monday 8th of July 2024 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? AM: Lightime reimagines the traditional clock by integrating flying lights within an infinite white circle, designed to reduce stress and invoke calm. The inspiration comes from the desire to simplify the timekeeping experience, making it less about counting every second and more about enjoying the moment. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? AM: My focus was on combining simplicity with functionality, using modern technology to create a clock that is both a timepiece and a piece of art. I aimed to craft something that helps integrate time seamlessly into the user's environment. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? AM: I plan to explore further technology integrations, such as IoT capabilities, to allow Lightime to sync with other smart home devices, enhancing its functionality and user interaction. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? AM: The concept and development of Lightime took approximately two months, from the initial sketches to the final product design. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? AM: Lightime was a self-initiated project, born from my passion for blending technological innovation with minimalist design to enhance everyday objects. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? AM: The design is currently being produced under my brand, and I am also considering partnerships with home decor and technology companies to broaden its reach. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? AM: I was motivated by the challenge of transforming how we perceive and interact with time in our living spaces, aiming to create a design that enriches the environment aesthetically and functionally. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? AM: While the design is original, I drew inspiration from modern art and technology-driven home products that prioritize clean lines and user-centered functionality. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? AM: The target customers for Lightime are individuals who appreciate modern design and technology, especially those looking to integrate smart, stylish devices into their homes. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? AM: Lightime sets itself apart with its ability to customize the color of the light to match the furniture and environment, offering a personalized and cohesive aesthetic, unlike traditional clocks. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? AM: The name "Lightime" is a blend of 'light' and 'time', highlighting the product's unique feature of using light to represent time, embodying the essence of its design philosophy. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? AM: I started with traditional sketches and then moved to digital modeling using Rhino to refine the design and prepare it for production. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? AM: The unique aspect is its elimination of clock hands, using a moving light to indicate time, which provides a minimal yet informative interface that changes the way we view time. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? AM: This project was a solo effort, though I consulted with electronic engineers to integrate the lighting technology effectively within the clock’s compact design. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? AM: Technology is central to Lightime, enabling the dynamic display of time through light and allowing users to customize the clock’s appearance via a digital interface. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? AM: The design was influenced by research into consumer preferences for home decor and smart home products, focusing on trends that emphasize minimalism and personalization. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? AM: One of the key challenges was integrating the lighting technology in a way that was both aesthetically pleasing and functional, ensuring that the light accurately represents the time without being intrusive. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? AM: I submitted Lightime to gain recognition for its innovative approach and to showcase how technology can transform ordinary objects into interactive art. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? AM: This project deepened my skills in electronic design and digital modeling, enhancing my ability to seamlessly integrate technology with everyday objects. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? AM: It's important to mention that Lightime is more than just a clock; it's a statement piece that reflects the evolving intersection of art, design, and technology in modern living spaces.
