Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Mohsen Koofiani (MK) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Mohsen Koofiani by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Proshot Coffee here.

Interview with Mohsen Koofiani at Wednesday 18th of May 2022

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MK: The main idea, taken from nature, from fantasy, there are guards who protect nature. I saw them as giants. This is the way nature produces coffee for us.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MK: There were several purposes to this design, But the main focus is to show the coffee process steps through revolutionary designing giant characters doing the process as natural bodies. It has simply a good feeling for everyone. (the first is that I wanted to connect with everyone through an imaginary world. Secondly, I wanted to show everyone the stages of the coffee process. Thirdly, through these giants, I wanted to invite everyone to peace and reconciliation with nature.)

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MK: In the future, we intend to make famous all the giants on the packaging. Show the giants to everyone and we have a big plan to make them bigger. From making small dolls to making cartoons and movies.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MK: Almost a year, from the time of idea generation to packaging printing.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MK: This project was commissioned by Proshot Company. But I was in charge of the design idea and character creation and printing of the packages.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MK: All the points of this project belong to Proshot Company and this is an exclusive and registered work.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
MK: When the decision was made to use these characters, we were all fighting the Covid pandemic. Depression and discouragement had crept into many people’s life. That's why I decided to put a smile on people's faces.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MK: The idea, design, and illustration of this package were my responsibility.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MK: Anyone who drinks coffee.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MK: The difference is in how you approach the coffee packaging design. What you see on coffee packages around the world are all real-world images and approaches. But in the packaging of Proshot coffee, you will be faced with an imaginary world. In fact, we wanted to lead the customer to a world that does not exist at that moment.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MK: Proshot means super happy in the ancient Persian language. It is already the brand name.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MK: Pencil, paper, and watercolor

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MK: Illustration and creation of coffee giants.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MK: Here I would like to express my special thanks to the Proshot Coffee Co. crew for their help in producing the content (familiarity with the coffee production process and tools). Undoubtedly, this would not have been possible without them.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MK: In order to execute more correctly and better, all the lines on the colors had to be reconstructed. Colors were controlled. That's why I used graphic software when implementing it.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MK: The process of coffee production and familiarity with simple tools required general research in ancient and modern coffee processing history. That's why I used a special researcher for this.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MK: Creating characters that are both product-related and audience-friendly was hard work, and most importantly, it was the first time the coffee process steps were shown with cartoon characters on coffee packs.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MK: When we saw that we had a good idea and a different implementation, we decided to see ourselves in this very important challenge. And what's better than A'design.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MK: I learned that to achieve a comprehensive and good job, you have to take a long time and wait.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
MK: I am very happy that I came out proud of this challenge. I'm happy for myself and for Proshot coffee.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
