Interview with JUYOUNG HWANG at Thursday 12th of May 2022

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JH: Design should clearly show meaning regardless of shape or size, and should present general themes from a unique point of view. That point of view is an Idea, an Inspiration, and the aggregate of those principles is a Design.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JH: The most important thing in the artwork is whether the audience knows the movie in the poster. Conversely, when they saw the movie, they remembered the poster.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JH: The award winning design will be used as personal portfolios.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JH: It didn't take long to come up with the concept. Each piece took about an hour.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JH: The Artworks contain personal experiences and emotions as personal creations. The goal is to allow the audience to see, enjoy and share experiences with the project.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JH: This design is not currently in production. If the opportunity arises, the designer wants to produce the posters by himself or lease the production right to a design company.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JH: The purpose of the project is to show a different perspective by reworking the industrial product.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JH: Alessandro Mendini's design 'Anna G'.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JH: Alessandro's first customer started with Alessi's chairman, Roberto.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JH: The biggest difference of this design is that it makes the audience think about the relationship between the subject of the movie and the objects used in the poster.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JH: Above all, 'Using Stuff' was the most powerful feature, so it was used as the title.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JH: The drawings used liners and brush pens. After that, it was finalized with a graphic design program (Photoshop, Illustration, etc.).

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JH: What is unique about this design is that it creates a fresh and fun vibe through common objects.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JH: Posters within the project were individually created. Finally, the designer asked relevant experts for advice on whether the posters were visually optimized and whether these descriptions were clear from an editorial perspective.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JH: The 'Using Stuff' project wanted to give people a social message about the world issues they are currently facing.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JH: The most important factor is the perception between the audience and the famous films selected by the prestigious institutions. Because a good movie everyone knows is an easy way to understand design. In addition, in order to see the design more intuitively, designer divided the sequence of the movie to create a mood board, extracted the signature color and used it in the artworks.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JH: The most difficult part was ‘making the work easy for anyone to understand’. Even if the design is visually excellent, if it cannot communicate with people, it is not ‘good design’.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JH: The motivation for participating in the competition is a request for nomination of artworks through e-mail.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JH: A notable improvement is the method of describing works that can be translated worldwide.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
JH: Juyoung Hwang is considering ways to expand this project in the future. He aims to conversion the arworks into 3D and interact with them through the application.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
