Interview with Teong Yan Ni at Saturday 29th of October 2022 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? YT: It was inspired by purple orchid flower that bloomed beautifully at my balcony. I enjoyed little beautiful things and I studied the details of the flower. I like purple flower myself and orchid represent our tropical country in Malaysia. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? YT: I want this design to have natural feeling, lively and vibrant. I want to achieve appreciation of my work. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? YT: I will continue to design to make this world more beautiful and I wish to design more sellable design as well. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? YT: For the whole collection it takes about 3 months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? YT: I design based on my design inspiration totally created originally. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? YT: No. My design is not sold yet. I have produced 1 set on my own for sampling and display purposes. Yes I planned to sell or lease my rights. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? YT: I like and enjoy nature myself and I always admire things around me. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? YT: I always pay attention to Christie's auction and jewellery exhibition for the reference of my design FS: Who is the target customer for his design? YT: Young, vibrant and confident lady FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? YT: It is the new way of wearing ring and the unconventional way of self-expression FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? YT: Purple Orchid is named over the original name of the flower I inspired FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? YT: Sketching, drawing tools and 3D CAD FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? YT: The color and usage of off-white pearl combined with purple stone make it unique FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? YT: I worked with our technical team and craftsmen for this design FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? YT: 3D CAD FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? YT: No FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? YT: The stone sorting and the sizes of the stone to represent the petal flowers FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? YT: It is always in my mind and I want to showcase to the world of my new creation FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? YT: I learnt that there are many factors to consider when designing and materializing the work FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
