Interview with SUN JIAN at Thursday 9th of November 2023 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JS: Our design aimed to honor and preserve the rich cultural heritage embedded within the art of blue calico, highlighting its historical significance and timeless appeal for contemporary audiences. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JS: We aimed to pay homage to the intricate craftsmanship and cultural significance of blue calico, preserving its legacy and ensuring its continued relevance and appreciation in contemporary society. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JS: We plan to organize exhibitions and showcases dedicated to "Lan Ya Baiyun," allowing audiences to engage with the intricacies of the design and immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage and artistry of blue calico. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JS: The design process for "Lan Ya Baiyun" spanned a comprehensive timeline, reflecting the intricate research, conceptualization, and execution involved in creating a tribute to the artistry and cultural heritage of blue calico. From the initial stages of ideation to the final implementation, the design process encompassed a period of approximately two years. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JS: The decision to design the concept for "Lan Ya Baiyun" was driven by a deep-rooted passion for preserving and celebrating the cultural heritage and artistry of blue calico, coupled with a strong commitment to showcasing the rich legacy of this traditional craft within a contemporary context. The design was not commissioned but emerged from a shared inspiration and dedication to honoring the intricate artistry and cultural significance of blue calico within the broader narrative of Chinese heritage. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JS: At present, our design for "Lan Ya Baiyun" remains a proprietary concept that has not been produced or used by another company. We have not entered into any agreements to sell or lease the production rights of this design to external entities. Our current intent is to retain full ownership of the design and potentially explore avenues for its production in the future under our own initiatives. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JS: The decision to design "Lan Ya Baiyun" stemmed from a profound appreciation for the intricate artistry and cultural significance of blue calico within the context of Chinese heritage. Our endeavor was motivated by a deep-seated commitment to preserving and celebrating the rich legacy of this traditional craft, as well as a desire to share its timeless allure with a global audience. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JS: While the design for "Lan Ya Baiyun" was primarily inspired by the rich cultural heritage and intricate artistry of blue calico, our creative process was informed by a deep appreciation for the diverse perspectives and contributions within the realm of traditional Chinese craftsmanship. While no specific external designs or designers directly influenced our work, we drew inspiration from a collective appreciation for the historical significance and artistic expressions embodied by various forms of traditional Chinese art and design. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JS: Individuals with a passion for art, culture, and heritage who appreciate the intricate beauty and historical significance of traditional Chinese crafts, including blue calico. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JS: Cultural Reverence: "Lan Ya Baiyun" embodies a profound reverence for the cultural heritage and artistic legacy of blue calico, showcasing a deep understanding of its historical significance and cultural resonance within the broader narrative of Chinese craftsmanship. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JS: "Lan Ya" (θι ): The term "Lan" directly translates to "blue" in Mandarin, alluding to the central theme of blue calico and its rich historical significance within Chinese craftsmanship. "Ya" embodies the notion of elegance and refinement, evoking a sense of sophistication and cultural heritage associated with the intricate artistry of blue calico. "Baiyun" (η½δΊ): "Baiyun" translates to "white cloud," serving as a metaphor for the purity, serenity, and timeless allure inherent in the art of blue calico. It symbolizes the ethereal beauty and enduring legacy of this cherished craft, invoking a sense of tranquility and artistic reverence that resonates with the intricate patterns and designs found within blue calico. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JS: Utilizing industry-standard graphic design software, we crafted visual representations of the book's cover design, incorporating intricate patterns, typography, and imagery that reflected the essence and cultural significance of blue calico. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JS: The incorporation of additional volumes and hand-made blue calico pieces within the book allows for an immersive tactile experience that enables readers to engage directly with the rich textures and intricate patterns of blue calico, fostering a deeper connection and appreciation for its artistic craftsmanship. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JS: Artisans and Craftsmen: We collaborated closely with experienced artisans and craftsmen specialized in traditional Chinese binding techniques and textile production, ensuring the meticulous execution of the hand-made elements and intricate details that defined the visual and tactile appeal of the design. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JS: Technological advancements in printing technologies facilitated the accurate reproduction of intricate patterns and colors inherent in blue calico, ensuring the faithful representation of the design's visual elements and enhancing the overall visual impact and aesthetic appeal of the book. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JS: Extensive research was conducted into the historical origins, cultural significance, and artistic evolution of blue calico within the context of traditional Chinese craftsmanship, providing a foundational understanding of its origins and evolution over time. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JS: Material Selection and Integration: Identifying and integrating high-quality materials that accurately represented the intricate textures and vibrant hues of blue calico while ensuring durability and aesthetic elegance posed a significant challenge, requiring extensive research and meticulous attention to detail. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JS: Global Visibility: By participating in an international design competition, we aimed to garner global visibility and recognition for the design concept, showcasing the rich legacy and cultural significance of blue calico to a diverse and international audience of design professionals, enthusiasts, and cultural institutions. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JS: Cultural Appreciation and Sensitivity: The immersive exploration of blue calico and its historical significance deepened my appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions embedded within traditional Chinese craftsmanship, fostering a heightened sense of cultural sensitivity and a deeper understanding of the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural legacies.
