Locarno Classification
The Locarno Classification (LOC), established by the Locarno Agreement (1968), is an international classification used for the purposes of the registration of industrial designs. Designs are divided up in to classes based on the type of design or product. The Locarno Classification System is based on an international agreement to standardise the classification of design applications, and is administered by WIPO (The World Intellectual Property Organization). A' Design Award & Competition accepts all type of products as listed in the Locarno Agreement. The current Locarno Classification comprises a list of 32 classes and many relevant sub-classes, which we accept as "Sub-Competition Categories". The existence and use of the Locarno Classification system brings with it the advantages of having an industrial design-specific classification system. This makes industrial design searches much simpler both on the national and international level. Also, since Locarno is an internationally recognized system, it prevents the need for reclassification when documents are exchanged internationally. If you are not sure about which design award category to choose to enroll your industrial product designs, please refer to the following table which matches the Locarno Classifications to A' Design Award & Competition categories alternatively choose the "Unexpected Design" category if you would wish us to assign the correct category. In this case, we will specify and enroll your design in the relevant industrial design class as part of our preliminary examination of the application. Please kindly note that the Locarno Classification is revised at regular intervals to reflect the latest technological developments, and we will update this page to match the relevant classifications.
