Interview with Mathias Weil at Tuesday 23rd of April 2019 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? MW: I wanted to become a photographer in my early years. however, my parents were more interested in learning a "serious" profession. after my apprenticeship and a few years of work, i decided to reorient my career and successfully turned my hobby into a profession. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? MW: The agency VR360° was born out of my passion for vr-photography and drone flying. during a 10-month build-up phase the agency started and has continued to expand since then. FS: What is "design" for you? MW: My photography is the door for me to show other old familiar views in new light, to discover new perspectives on the environment and to pass them on. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? MW: All kinds of photography and 3d-design, I always discover new and interesting possibilities! FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? MW: There are to much good designs out there, to talk about. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? MW: The Annual Report (a magazin with 80 pages) of the ZSW (Centre for Solar Energy and Water Stuff Research Baden-Württemberg) in Stuttgart, Germany 1996. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? MW: VR-Technology, high resolution photography, and the Maxon software Cinema 4D FS: When do you feel the most creative? MW: In the bathtub. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? MW: Perfectionism FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? MW: 1. How can I make it even better and more interesting? 2. I always try to feel free and unprejudiced while designing. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? MW: Relaxed, relieved, satisfied and what comes next? FS: What makes a design successful? MW: When it awakens emotions, makes you think and stays in your memory. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? MW: The technical aspect, followed by the emotional part. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? MW: It's hard to say, design is constantly evolving, new techniques are constantly being developed. design will always come in new forms. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? MW: I haven't had my own exhibition yet. I'm currently working on a virtual viewing experience without a VR headset - more will not be revealed yet! FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? MW: Mother nature, landscapes, architecture and commercial construction and road landscapes. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? MW: My Mac, my car, the parfume of my girlfriend, a old chair from the 18th century and a lot of books. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? MW: Getting up, coffee, shower, checking e-mails, checking appointments, off to shooting, or to the office, coffee, taking pictures or editing pictures on the computer, relaxing with friends, eating something and if necessary back to the office or shooting. the end is between 1 and 2 o'clock at night. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? MW: Do what you want, do it with passion and love for the details. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? MW: Nikon D 850, Nikon Z7, Phantom 4 Pro, Lightroom, Photoshop and PTGui FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? MW: I use every minute of free time to find new things or to work on designs. I think a lot of designers having a problem with that - me too. :) FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? MW: das ist schwer vorherzusagen, ideen kommen und gehen und sind nicht an zeit gebunden ... "die gedanken sind frei" (old german folk song) FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? MW: How did you do that? What equipment do you use? FS: What was your most important job experience? MW: A hdr-panorama photo shooting on the aletsch glacier in switzerland at minus 16° C FS: Who are some of your clients? MW: ZSW, Otus Verlag, Edition XXL, Leica, Maxon, Adobe, Domeble, Maground, Horag Racing, Car Collectors, Google, Sparkasse, Winery Müller Dr. Becker, Schlossparkklinik Dirmstein, Sockswear, Errante Vinothek .... FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? MW: Everything i do, thats what i ever want! FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? MW: Building up a team of vr-photographers FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? MW: I work alone (but i need to hire next) FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
