Interview with Sana at Sunday 17th of October 2021 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? S: I got into the design realm by coincident, and then I understood the power of self-expression through design and making. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? S: El_Masnad was my thesis design study. Now, I am in the path to discover ways and tools to bring more concept og living on the floor to reality. FS: What is "design" for you? S: Design is empowerment. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? S: I love to explore the concept of floor as living space and make more fun Lounge Carpets. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? S: I love to explore the concept of floor as living space and make more fun Lounge Carpets. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? S: I am interested in computational design. I am now advancing my scripting skills using the famous Grasshopper software for Algorithmic Aided Design. I was exploring a lot with it,and actually, the stitching pattern on El_Masnad is an artistic representation of graph of information. Specifically, it is about Saudi women. FS: When do you feel the most creative? S: At 3:00 a.m. weather in my dreams or awake. 3am is when dreamers go to work. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? S: I try to focus on the Human-Centered aspects, and I try not to neglect, as much as possible, the environmental friendly aspects. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? S: Meditative FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? S: Humbled FS: What makes a design successful? S: For my designs, I think when it can give back to community and culture. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? S: Appearance FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? S: Smart material and programming. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? S: The last one was Grand Design Exhibition Bologna Design Week. The next one, is Decofair in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? S: Nature, people, trends and Zaha Hadid. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? S: I live in L.A. a wonderful place, however, I grew up in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Awonderful place too. I loved it. FS: How do you work with companies? S: I haven’t yet. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? S: Designers are beauty makers, so they can help you emphasize or your beauty in creative ways. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? S: 50% research, 25% thinking & 25% doing FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? S: My travelling bag, wii, my mascara packaging design, how my bed positioned so I can see the full moon at 10 p.m. every month FS: Can you describe a day in your life? S: Not a day is similar to the next. there really an absence of routine. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? S: Do not stay up late, if you figured out how, teach me! FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? S: Cons, Staying up late. Pros, finding your own independent voice. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? S: Stay up late, I don’t know any other way :-D FS: What skills are most important for a designer? S: Research and analytical abilities. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? S: 29.First, Sugar. Rhino, Grasshopper – Photoshop. Re-Thinking seating book by Peter Opsvic. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? S: I don’t, I just isolate myself from people. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? S: It depends. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? S: “Which color should I pick for my bedroom?” ;-p FS: Who are some of your clients? S: Saudi Design Week, Dubai Design Week, Rushaid, Waed, Ashary and Art direction. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? S: The work that has a balance between the physical, like in making, and the intellectual, like in coming up with the concept. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? S: Make more floor furniture. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? S: I work by myself, however, I look forward to meet other designer and team up with them in fun group projects. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about? S: I am currently working on a small, but fun job. I am creating an interactive design for a Partí™ in an architectural conference to show case their patterning abilities. FS: How can people contact you? S: By e-mail
