Interview with Irene Lim at Sunday 23rd of April 2017 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? IL: I was studying Diploma of Interior Design in PJ College of Art & Design in Malaysia. I think the only reason of being a designer is I really enjoy to see/appreciate a nice art or design piece since I was young. And with the passion that I have all along, I was naturally turn to become a designer and really love to be a designer so much. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? IL: I am still a employee at this moment. However, my aim is to have a own design studio in future. FS: What is "design" for you? IL: To me, design is a solution to ease people's life or enhance the life/space in terms of functionality, practicality and aesthetically. No right or wrong to any design, and I do appreciate every design in the world. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? IL: Public design, hospitality design and furniture design. FS: When do you feel the most creative? IL: The most creative moment I am is after I had a good sleep or rest. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? IL: comfortable and overall proportional of the design. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? IL: Exciting! FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? IL: Extremely excited and touching. FS: What makes a design successful? IL: A well-considerate and the passion that have put in a design. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? IL: Does the primary function of the intended design created match with the final design. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? IL: Designer should put their shoes in the society's feet and provide design solution for the society and environment which is helpful for them. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? IL: Design field is evolving from traditional to boundless stage, especially with the advance of the technology nowadays and more creative of youngster today. The future of design will be more interesting and going towards boundless direction. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? IL: The last exhibition that I joined is in Malaysia during year 2012. When there is any opportunity. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? IL: My design inspiration mostly comes from humanity behaviour and nature. I always love to observe the surrounding things to feed my creativity. My sources of inspirations are the things happen in my surrounding and can be from anything. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? IL: I'm a Malaysian and currently living and working in Singapore. I think multi-cultural country as Malaysia do affects my designs all the time. The material application may be more daring and richer when designing which I think it is helpful in some of the cases. I think the cons side of living in my country when designing is the non-completed or limited choices of the technology of manufacturing that we having right now. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? IL: It depends on what kind of object is designing. Days to months to take is possible. FS: How can people contact you?
