DESIGN NAME: Crave
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile Application
INSPIRATION: Food just the thought of it makes everyone’s mouths water and smiles wider. We remember our grandmother’s famous recipes or our favorite childhood meals and we are reminded of fond memories that bring us joy. Our team recognizes that each person has a unique relationship with food and a deeply personal food journey. Crave celebrates everyone’s individual relationship with food by providing a personalized platform that allows users to inspire, explore, and create a community that thrives in culinary exploration.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Crave serves to answer the basic and primal question of, what are you craving? A visual discovery engine, the application connects users to their desired recipes and restaurants. Crave consolidates the end to end food ordering experience from the beginning of the process, where the chat-bot helps determine where and what to eat, to the end of the process, where the user makes a table reservation. From social networking, to earning badges, to improving one’s culinary skills, the team hopes that those who use Crave become excited to play, learn, and discover new culinary adventures.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The application features a minimalist design system with vibrant colors and attractive interface animations. As the main purpose of this application is to inspire the user, several of the interface frames feature a pinboard-style photo grid layout. The seamless enter and exit animationsare designed to suggest a unified flow throughout the application, which creates a cohesive user experience from the initial craving/inspiration to the final moments of interaction, such as writing a review
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Young design professionals based in San Francisco, Anjali Srikanth Mary Camara and Noelle Robbins put their heads together to come up with an innovative yet useful application idea that revolved around their love for food. Inspired by the need for a consolidated food application that inspired users through visual discovery, while also providing the ability to reserve tables, we asked our colleagues, Justin Hull and Regita Handijaya based in Columbia, South Carolina to join our project. The development and refinement of the Crave application spanned for approximately five months between October 2019 to February 2020.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The breadth of our research spanned across many food related platforms, including visual discovery, food delivery, and cooking blogs. Our analysis determined the pros, cons as well as the design and market trends of each platform. We discovered that while many food applications understand the significance of convenience and efficiency competitors fail to personalize the user experience. Crave celebrates these individual stories as an inclusive and personalized food application that answers everyone’s food craving.
CHALLENGE: An application that caters to the broad category of food, the challenge was to understand the user’s needs, determine prioritization, and appeal to the target audience. Furthermore, in such a saturated market, the team needed to positively distinguish our application from the rest of the competition. With unique and electrifying color combinations, to utilizing conversation design, to the ability to foster community through sharing culinary experiences, Crave creates a hybrid that is both familiar in some of its elements, yet new and unique in presentation and design.
