DESIGN NAME: Dahlia C1
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mechanical Watch
INSPIRATION: The original inspiration first came from a desire to create a watch with a flying tourbillon, surrounded with a multitude of finely cut gemstones. The flower shape naturally imposed itself by its boldness and a natural repetitive pattern, adding poetic value to an extremely complex challenge in the actual gemcutting work.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This watch is the fruit of a passionate project that goes beyond making a watch, in a process that is closer to the work of an artist. Every single one of the gemstone petals on the dial is sculpted and polished by hand, each in a precise shape and size. The invisible mounting, specifically elaborated for the design, is underpinned by complex engineering, a real feat of technique and design that epitomises the values of traditional craftsmanship at the heart of Beauregard.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This watch uses a self winding mechanical system known as a flying tourbillon, using body movement to wind itself. If taken off, it has a 72 hours power reserve.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2012 and finished in november 2018. The Dahlia C1 watch was exhibited at the 2019 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Geneve, as well as Baselworld 2019. It was also a finalist at the Grand prix d'horlogerie de Genève (Switzerland) in november 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To achieve such precise gemcutting, we had to create new cutting techniques and tools. The stones are mechanically set, so the cut has to be precise to 2/100 mm.
On the mechanical movement, the delicate open floral design of the bridges had to be realized by wire-cutting, since traditional milling was not precise or stable enough.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dial : Central open-worked flower-shaped flying tourbillon cage surrounded by 48 hand polished gemstone petals.
Case size : 38.8mm diameter x 15.05mm height
Glass: Convex sapphire crystals on front and back, with double anti-reflective coating both sides. Water resistance: 5 ATM
Movement : Self-winding mechanical calibre with central flying tourbillon. Power reserve: 72 hours. Frequency: 28,800 vph (4 Hz)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Stones used in the watch industry are usually flat with less than 1mm thickness. To enhance the beauty of the stone, I wanted to create a dial that would have volume: a flower made from individual petals. Thus, I went for an organic style faceting and designed an extremely precise and invisible setting.
I then designed and assembled a special 4-axis milling machine capable of giving each petal that natural, organic form, while maintaining a 2/100 mm precision for placement within the watch's dial, which took weeks of drafting, testing and adjustments.
CHALLENGE: Achieving a flawless, precise cut of each petal.
