DESIGN NAME: Double X
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table
INSPIRATION: The inspiration is from the European Mauresque decorative art, particularly from the octagram's pattern, used here as a structure of the table. Then this geometric art provides a structural solution. The complete assembly makes two X on the table, thus explaining the name.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This table is in flat-pack design and requires no screw no glue. Its aesthetic is the result of the balance between each piece of the assembly. The structure was also thought to be a sculpture, that's what gives to this table this unique aesthetic.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Everyone can easily make the XX Table, by following the plans' description. Just print the plans at the good scale, and cut the wood with your own devices. Also, you can go to your closest fab lab with the plan files, and they will make the nine pieces automatically with a CNC device.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in summer 2015, in Courcelles-Les-Lens, France, and finished a few weeks later in the same place. This idea was already mature since the structure assembly and the geometric patterns had been assimilated for a while. The project just needed to be drawn and to find a shape. Then, after a few weeks and many sketches, miniature models, and load empirical testing, this prototype was born. Its launch is planned for the summer 2017 in Paris, in limited edition.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This table is designed to be made easily by anyone just with plywood. It's recommended to use birch plywood B/BB 18mm to ensure the resistance, stability and sustainability of the product. The original table top is in birch plywood covered by a light melanine layer on its two opposite faces. The table top is also available in plexiglas 18 mm if you want to appreciate the whole structure beneath the transparent surface.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The XX table dimensions are 900 mm x 1800 mm x 750 mm. It's assembled with 9 pieces in plywood 18 mm cutted on a CNC or laser device. The whole assembly works by resistance between each bridle joint, the best choice to support vertical loads. Each bridle joint is essential to get the structure stability. The geometric structure allows an equal loads repartition.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The challenge of this project was in two points. The first one was to do a revival of an old architectural knowledge, and transform it into a contemporary design answer. The second goal was to produce a table very easy to make, yet revealing its architectural complexity once the whole assembly is done.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult part was to make the knowledge transmission ludic. The user has to be capable to find how to assemble this table almost by himself/herself. The achievement of this assembly has to be an enjoyable moment, like completing a 3D puzzle.
