DESIGN NAME: WABO
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sustainable Chair
INSPIRATION: There are many approaches in sustainable product design, including recycling of plastic water bottles, but most of the recycling process for these are inefficient with complexity of the process and more energy use. So, the design approach for this project is to focus on up-cycling of the plastic water bottle, without going through a complex processing, still make it useful and beautiful.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "WABO" uses empty plastic water bottles to complete its structural form as a chair. The trapped air inside the bottle provide cushion for the back support and seat. The user can collect and use their own plastic water bottles and attach to the main body. It would take less than 10 minutes to assemble the whole chair.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: WABO is easy to ship and assemble and disassemble for moving with minimum part counts. Since the user can collect their own plastic water bottles, they can customize the unit using different types of bottle. Most of the plastic water bottles in the markets are different shapes but similar sizes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2015 and finished in November 2015 in West Lafayette, Indiana.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: WABO uses used plastic water bottles and ferrous metal and painted latex based color, which is also biodegradable.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 407 mm x Depth 432 mm x Height 1016 mm
TAGS: water, bottle, chair, upcycle, recycle
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Primary research was conducted to understand peoples behaviors and perceptions about recycling process and methods. Also, conducted secondary research to find out other types of recycling and up-cycling process and applications.
CHALLENGE: We found out that most of the people don't really understand the recycling, fabrication process, and its challenges. People are not so aware of the complexity of processing these materials to make into new products, thinking that recycling is an only way they can help keeping our environment sustainable.
