DESIGN NAME: Grey Matter
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Children's Museum
INSPIRATION: The formal characteristics evolve within a design process I research in my own work and in architectural studios I teach. Through a combination of formal languages, the design emerges from both the technical issues and ideas of abstraction - rational and intuitive. Through this process, new spatial potentials are discovered and the work is imbued with form/space that encourages exploration and discovery.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Children are naturally curious, seeking opportunities to playfully explore and discover the possibilities of the world around them. We seek to engage the potential of the human mind via an innovative architectural expression that activates the senses, ignites imagination, and heightens the anticipation of new discoveries revealed via movement through space. The design leverages internal and external environments revealing the urban context as an extension of the museum.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Through formal, spatial and programmatic interactions the projects unique organization requires occupants to pause, reflect and engage the environment cognitively and sensually. New relationships are revealed via movement that requires a mental presence and participation leading to discovery. The complexity makes it difficult to truly know or understand as a whole and therefore allows each occupant to produce his or her own unique experience within a dynamic public space.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design started on January 13, 2014 and further revisions took place post-competition between May 28 to July 31 – 3 months work in total. The was an entry into the International Ideas Competition "Designing a Louisville Children’s Museum, Revitalizing a Downtown Edge" - located in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a speculative project organized by the competition sponsors who ran the competition ran from August 15, 2013 to February 10, 2014.
