| DESIGN NAME: Snowskate PRIMARY FUNCTION: Skate for soft and hard snow INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the design and execution of the Snow skate is from older copies which have been used in countries where the ice has not been as dominant, but however with opportunities for traditional skiing or for those special skates. The showed way to clamp or bind the skate is only seen in the Faroe Islands, however no one knows who came up with this particular technique. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The product and design is a special developed snow skate for winter sports, entertainment and leisure play. The skate is intended for soft and hard snow, but can also be used on ice. The special feature is that it can be used for general winter boots and requires no special equipment or other measures. The skate has a practical design which both children and adults can use. The skate is made in wood with a steel runner, and requires a special tie technique for a snug and firmly fit to the boots. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The skate is used similar to ice skates, but is primarily intended for hard snow and practiced on flat terrain as on steep hills. The method for tying the skates is shown in 4 photos included the manufactured product. This makes it easy for anyone to mount the skates firmly secured to the boots. The skates are fun to practice, and have the special advantage for use on ordinary boots that have heels. The materials have been carefully chosen to achieve a good quality and a minimum of maintenance. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in summer 1998 with studies of boot sizes and types being basic for three sizes in small, medium and large. The designed has focus on optimum performance and requirements to quality materials. The production was carried out at a carpentry workshop where stainless steel rails and laces were mounted. Two hundred pairs were produced and sold in sports and leisure stores. The skates have been in use for some years and are now marketed as a new concept for play and sports. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The origin of the skate is homemade and primarily for play for children, and therefore not specifically designed, but only with a practical importance for to skate. The Snowskate was designed in 1999 and put for production with requirements for streamlining and requirements similar to ice skates. The material is mahogany with stainless steel rail screwed to the bottom. The special technique to tie the skate is definitely needed to a proper retain to the boot. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Small: Boot size 27 to 32 Mahogany: 233mm x 30mm x 44mm. Steel rail: 243mm x 14mm x 2,5mm Medium: Boot size 33 to 37 Mahogany: 275mm x 33mm x 49mm. Steel rail: 286mm x 14mm x 2,5mm Large: Boot size 38 to 44 Mahogany: 315mm x 35mm x 54mm. Steel rail: 332mm x 14mm x 2,5mm Nylon: 1900 / 2000 / 2150mm x 5mm. Screws: 3 / 4pc. 3mm x 16 / 20mm TAGS: Skeeter for hard snow, Snowskates with metal runners, Skates for hard snow, Snowrider, Single deck snowskates RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Analyzes were made with requirements for optimal function for height and width of the skate avoiding heel retrofit. Concrete examples were made and tested and refined until the best dimensions were obtained with streamlined design and choice of quality materials. The width of the steel rail is selected from the experience and for optimal maneuvering and suitable use in hard snow. Location of laces is where the best fitting is achieved. In front are marketing and a new winter leisure concept. CHALLENGE: The design challenge was to find the optimal current boot profile to three standards, small, medium and large. The next was to dimension and design longitudinal and cross-sectional profile to avoid skate heeled after installation and usage. Mounting technique was known from childhood, but there was never developed and designed an ingenious and effective product in this low and practical technology, which without effort can be mass produced for a brand new game and sport concept.
