| DESIGN NAME: Entry Lux Coffee Mug PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cup INSPIRATION: Inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night on the start of design, we detected some points of similarity between the florid aurora scene and Starry Night. Framed in natural scenes, both are detached from reality in a sense. The design team intends to blend the aurora scene with handmade porcelain to the extent that user can access to the illusory and enchanting aspect of happiness even though surrounded by reality. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This mug is characterized by its illusionary and beautiful aurora glaze as the key feature. The designer turns to the hand painting technique which is considered as the most primitive to fulfill our pursuit of a high degree of integration of nature and design. The extra thick raw wood mat that retains the texture and pattern of raw wood, paired with the stirring rod made from raw wood and delicate package, makes up a whole piece of product. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The log stick is designed with the consistent elements as the mat, the stirring stick made of black walnut brings user closer to naturally grown logs in the afternoon sunshine. Its design length has been well-thought so that the stirring range just reaches the bottom. The conical shape of the mug and the mat not only provides heat insulation to the mat, but also exhibits the unique combination of double cones. The body that is sloped a bit renders the vibrant color of the aurora in daylight. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The research and development phase of this project kicked off in March 2022 and was first completed in late October 2023. The deliverables were released in China in December 2023, just before Christmas Eve. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A dark, clean, glossy glaze is applied to the surface of the mug, fired in a tunnel kiln at 1200℃ for a more fine-grained glaze finish. The well-trained operator colors the body by hand to give 360° fine brushstroke on all sides of the mug. The mat and the stirring stick are crafted from North American black walnut logs. The whole set is wrapped in biodegradable, recyclable materials and comes with a suede bag for storage. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Cup size :82mmX82mmX72mm Size of coaster :160mmx160mmx20mm Combination size :160mmx160mmx95mm TAGS: Coffee, Aurora, containers, art, craft RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The team conducted a consumer survey to assess the perceived design and quality of this mug. The results suggest that the majority of respondents were positively impressed by how this mug looks like and admitted its unique artistic appeal and fine crafts. Additionally the respondents generally accepted its ease of use and cleaning, and the addition of the walnut wood mat and the stirring stick are believed to make the product more unaffected and warmer. CHALLENGE: What challenges the project implementation is how to exhibit the natural and florid aurora color glaze, keep the brush strokes consistent and fluorescence sufficient, and how to avoid the special glaze from crazing during firing process. Up to 100 ratios and mixtures of pigment, humidity, temperature, brush stroke, and kiln temperature were tested. Through many trials in firing tests, the aurora color finally outruns the expected outcomes in every aspect of surface gloss and smoothness.
