DESIGN NAME: EduTainer
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Portable Education Container
INSPIRATION: Lack of education is one of the greatest challenges that is facing our society today. As Nelson Mandela said: „Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” The technology for providing good quality education with the help of digital platforms already exists; as a designer, I can help to deliver these solutions to remote parts of the world by designing a modern, portable, high-tech classroom.
The design in this project is driven primarily by functionality and reliability. I am proud of the way that I could combine these aspects with a modern, aesthetic, welcoming look.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: EduTainer is the first of our five Tainer solutions. It offers a highly mobile solution by bringing educational facilities and medical help centers for regions where access to education and basic healthcare is an issue.
The primary strength of this design is in its functionality. It is portable, easy and quick to set up, and it is designed to last. The challenge of making the most out of a container framework was tackled through clever design and modern technological solutions.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The EduTainer can be assembled and disassembled in mere hours. When it is packed, the size of it is that of a standard transportation container. When installed, it is turned into a fully functioning classroom with sides that open up. As opposed to a traditional classroom, it comes equipped with digital devices needed for teacherless/independent learning, climate control, and a modular nature that can accomodate whole schools, not just single classrooms. It is modern, portable, and reliable.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started as a concept in mid-2019. Currently, our team is ready to manufacture the prototype in a hangar used to build custom containers. We are currently looking for clients

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design focused on assuring reliability and sturdiness, with an assembly process that leaves a low chance of human error. The units feature semi-automatic profile cutter machinery, and semi-automatic welding and constructing robotic arms. The majority of the parts are made of aluminum and steel, made with CNC machines, attached to the container frame as modules.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research done for the project was a two-step process. First of all, we conducted thorough needs analysis to better understand the use cases of the EduTainer, in order to find out what features are the most needed. Afterwards, we researched the technical solutions that are most suitable to achieve the desired results. Reliability and sturdiness were identified as the key features, as well as the need for a swift assembly process, and therefore genuine portability.
CHALLENGE: To design well-functioning portable, modular equipment which is compact enough to fit the confined space, and hidraulic opening/closing mechanism that guarantees that the transportation and the assembly process is both quick and effective. A specific design challenge was the placement of the 140 kms of cables of the solar panels and batteries. Also, the area of the container almost doubles when it is assembled, so we needed to make sure that all the equipment fits securely during the transportations process in a very limited space.
