Interview with Dmitry Pogorelov at Thursday 26th of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? DP: The main idea of this art-installation is to convey a new potential of technologies in the field of the renewable energy. And the ultimately story of it is to tell, amaze and inspire people and to transfer new fillings about the renewable energy. This main task was set by customer Fund for infrastructure and educational programs RUSNANO Group with the goal to promote it’s technologies in such extraordinary way. Primarily viewer can notice glowing iridescent pulsating sphere. It has many functions and images in the installation. The fist is to convey the image of heart that is pulsating and life. The second is the image of fillings that are sparkle by different colors. The third is the image of planet that is united all people on it and the image that is united all people in its life and fillings. Viewer can also see the image of planet as it has an orbit where there are technologies in the field of the renewable energy are placed. The technologies have the second role in this installation, as it should play the second role in life. But it can be noticed that it gives life for heart of installation as well as technologies sustain life for people. When wind generators in the art-installation work slowly and power generation is slow the sphere shines dimly, when wind generators work quickly and power generation goes faster and then the sphere begins to pulsate intensively, thus symbolizing life. A viewer also can see in the image of sphere a logo of Fund for infrastructure and educational programs RUSNANO Group. It was one of main idea how to integrate the values and image of the company and the values and the image of technologies, life and fillings. From a side view it can be noticed that the central sphere of installation and the orbit have a tilt that is equal to the Earth's axial tilt, 23 degrees. It gives more symbolic connection with idea of our planet. And if to perceive the whole image of installation a viewer can reveal the image of an entity escaping from a substance which symbolizes freedom such as flying whale. Some viewers tell that they see an image of spaceship Enterprise from the film Star track, or another airship. But this is denote one thing that the ultimately intent of technologies is to give life and fillings for freedom. The entity that is art-installation conveys this entire story. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? DP: The installation will continue to travel through exhibitions and accompany conferences in the field of renewable energy sources. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? DP: It is hard to tell particularly how long did I designed the concept as it is elaborated during produce. But I can tell exactly that it take me one and half months to design concept an five months to produce the installation as there was very much technical nuances. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? DP: The design was commissioned and as the result the installation has not only art direction but also a commercial. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? DP: As the customer of this installation is an auditory from heads of different companies to ordinary people so the image had to be understandable and abstract together. It had to be recognizable on the one hand, on the other cause questions and bewilderment. After all, only the incomprehensible leaves an indelible mark in emotional memory. The installation has such bright and in some sense naivete image to refer to our childhood thoughts about the world that could be full of life, fillings and freedom. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? DP: The installation has the name Greenenj as the symbiosis of Green, that means pure and natural, and Energy, that means something about technologies. The name sounds interesting and meaningful. And I thought that it can be also be the name of planet as our second home. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? DP: In a base of the design process is my author's design methodology. It based on studying of human psychology and on the semiotic of constructing meanings in the form of a design product. Semiotic method helped to create a single story in the art installation. All colors, shapes and textures, interacting with each other in the context of the image, and also interacting with real or abstract images that exists in the viewer mind, help to recreate the original idea. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? DP: I had helping and consulting by a producing company “Factory layouts” that is situated in Moscow. I worked close with engineers to create not only beautiful but durable installation. The result is solid and beautiful art-installation that could be dismantled into four parts and mounted in any enclosed space. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? DP: Of course the role of technology is on the first place. But it more visual and imaginative than real. For example, the central sphere is a number of LEDs that covered acrylic glass that dispersives LED’s light and created an image of amazing substance in the sphere. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? DP: Before designing there was a research work. It shows that the main project image had be concentrated not on satisfying physiological electricity needs or security needs (the most common stereotype about renewable energy), but on actualizing spiritual needs that are at the top of Maslow's pyramid of needs. And such needs are needs in freedom as a result of satisfying needs in life and fillings. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? DP: The hardest point in the design process was a research of the united image. And such image had become an entity like a whale.
