Interview with Ginger Kong at Thursday 28th of June 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? GK: I was going back into a minimalist approach and thinking, "What can we do with an ordinary 8.5x11 flyer?" Like many, I get stacks of flyers in mail that end up in the trash. It's a waste. I decided to turn an ordinary flyer into an interactive virtual reality viewer. 2D meet 3D. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? GK: This is a wonderful accolade to be among great designers from all around the world. This certainly is an encouragement to continue bringing forth new products and hopefully inspire more woman-owned studios in this field. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? GK: I saw a need. I took something simple flyer that we take for granted everyday and dispose haphazardly. I began to think how we can repurpose the flyer into something else that was useful, sustainable, and fit within the context for advertisement.... a virtual reality viewer. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? GK: The Angry Mailer flyer is adaptable and can be used to advertise any occasion. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? GK: The name, Angry Mailer, is a little quirky and gave the flyer its character. Anyone would be angry to see tons of paper end up in trash. The name stuck with the purpose of the design... not to waste paper or the flyer will get angry. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? GK: Paper, scissors, and a little creativeness goes a long way. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? GK: It's a flyer that turns into a virtual reality viewer. One can explore the world from their couch. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? GK: User needs to attach phone to the vr viewer for the interactive 360 experiences.
