Interview with CTRC Design Consultant Ltd. at Wednesday 26th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? CL: We have been working in interior design over ten years, as per our experience a wall feature is a very important element in the interior space. In a conventional situation, if you want to have a nice interior, you might need to find an interior designer and build by a contractor but it seems very difficult for some people if they just want simply decorate their own wall by themselves and they don’t have any ideas or choices. Therefore, our concept was inspired by the above factors that to design a wall feature from complex to simple. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? CL: Our objective is to let everyone design their own exclusive wall feature, people can install and remove it by themselves, the whole process is an interact activities, family or friends could gather around to design, share and install their wall feature in any space. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? CL: We are now working on the prototype, finding other possible materials as options. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? CL: We spent around one month on the preliminary concept, then we took 2-3 months to fine tune on details and drawings. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? CL: This is not a commissioned project, we like to create and design new things, we wish our design can be shared to everyone to use in their life. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? CL: We intent to produce this work by ourselves, although Pelcraft is a product but it is more about the design service, this product will lose its interest without injecting new design ideas and consecutive improve the product according to the market. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? CL: As mentioned previously, as we are interior designers, we would like to design things which are relatable. We wish people would use our works that we designed in their life and contribute in design industry. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? CL: Definitely two of us, we do influence and urge each other. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? CL: Target customers are between young to middle age whom are demanding on design and wish to decorate the space by themselves with a simple and convenient way. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? CL: We named this wall feature as Pelcraft, Pel is the smallest discrete component of an image or picture on a CRT screen (usually a coloured dot), craft is an activity that involves making something by using your hand, so the combination of these two words are entirely expressed the essence of this project item. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? CL: Our Pelcraft modules are 3-dimenional, different combination of modules with lighting effect and diversity of colour, they could formed a innovative and unique piece of wall feature. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? CL: As we want to design this product from complex to simple, we decided this product itself must be handy, super lightweight, safe, flexible and convenient to use. The development of the design process was followed using these directions to proceed. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? CL: It is the best way to get recognition and A Design Award is the most influence international platform. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? CL: This Pelcraft project has given us a different experience compared with our usual interior design projects, we feel particularly joyful, more energetic and make us more young during the designing and development.
