Hustler Redesign Sex Product Line For Hustler by Joy Lin

Home > Winners > Design #23851 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Joy Lin (JL) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Joy Lin by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Hustler redesign here.

Interview with Joy Lin at Sunday 22nd of April 2012

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JL: The erotic pairing of masculinity and femininity served as the main inspiration for the design. Each product demonstrates the coming together of two individuals to form a single entity.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JL: My primary goal was to create a sex product line that is approachable. While a lot of sex product packaging on shelves today are blatantly raunchy, my design is hygienic and sexy. I wanted this to be a beautiful, subtle product that you can leave out on your dresser without fearing that visitors might see it.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JL: I hope to sell the production rights to a mid-tier to high-tier sex brand. It would be truly rewarding to see this concept brought to life.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JL: From beginning to end, the design process lasted for 14 weeks.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JL: The new design focuses on couples, both heterosexual and homosexual, that are looking to add a little spice to their sex lives. The couple is open to trying something new, but may feel intimidated by the “freaky” vibe of most adult products.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JL: While duality is not a new concept in the sex industry, my design creates an impact by exploring the two-fold nature of relation, contrast, movement, and/or penetration.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JL: I believe the dual lubricant is the most intriguing piece. The lubricant design really plays off of users’ interaction with the product, from the coming together of forms to allow dispensing of the product, to touching the textured “rough” and “smooth” halves to decide which is the appropriate choice for the occasion.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JL: The design was greatly influenced by conducted interviews with both consumers and professionals. I spoke with a former Hustler model/porn star/prostitute, a Spearmint Rhino dancer, a tantra yoga instructor, an erotic photographer, and a number of other individuals for insight into the perception of sex and sex products on the market. From this, I saw that there is a great desire for clean, sleek, and simple sex products.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JL: Sex can be a particularly sensitive and even unspeakable subject, so it was challenging to keep people open-minded to the topic and to its potential.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
