Interview with Francesca De Blasi at Sunday 15th of April 2012

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
FD: This collection was born as an emotion, is homesickness for my land and the sea, which is vital for every Sardinian, but above all I remember of my ichilhood. An image, a memory, a feeling impossible to describe in words and tried to best express and recreate the myriad of colors and reflections that are created when the rays of the sun meets the blue sea of my Sardinia.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
FD: I developed this collection to participate at the European contest "The Link 2010" organized by the Mare di Moda in Cannes (France), classifying Nr. 1 First Place and winning the The Link Award 2010 in the beachwear section

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
FD: I hope to get to know my talents, my creativity. After the collection "Luxi de Mari mesudì" I made another collection "Janas" who had a fashion show at the International Beachwear Saloon Mare d'Amare, Florence. I am currently preparing a new collection.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
FD: Unlike other projects that typically require more timing, the idea came to 'a sudden, everything was clear and defined in one, maybe two days, was really a light.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
FD: I followed an inspiration, a telling image that I had impressed on my memory, images of a beautiful landscape that not everyone has the opportunity to see and experience every day.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
FD: At the time I designed and built everything with my hands, do not rule out selling. I'd love to find a sponsor, someone to help me produce and sell my projects.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
FD: I realize women's clothing, beachwear and accessories.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
FD: no

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
FD: Obviously, given the uniqueness of the clothing, the target is very high, an elite clientele. A clientele attentive to detail, the preciousness and elegance.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
FD: It 'a unique item, the application of Swarovsky strass by hand one by one, assembling, and choosing different shades to match creates a result that no machine can duplicate.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
FD: Luxi de Mari mesudì is written in the Sardinian language, and literally means Light of the Sea at Midday and refers to the reflections of the sun on the water crystal clear.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
FD: The combination and how to approach the strass to create the reflections of the sea

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
FD: I made quite independently and self-taught.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
FD: Technology is not of primary importance.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
FD: It 'was influenced by research on the Sardinian handicraft traditions, particularly the tradition of Bisso, the silk of the sea.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
FD: Yes, I added models

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
FD: I decided to participate because it was a prestigious contest and thanks to the university had the opportunity to participate for free.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
FD: I improved my technical skills, design and manufacture of garments. I learned that one must always believe in yourself and free your creativity without being impositions from the outside.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
