With Metric-Ganic Chen explores the notion of how civilization imprints knowledge and how humans have shaped the earth to create culture and history - through this lens, the sculptural bench is explored via the study of natural and mathematical patterns. Differentiating between inorganic and organic forms, the origami appearance of the timber is a representation of human knowledge based on mathematical calculations, which contrasts with the natural grain of the white oak representing the forest and earth.

The furniture piece was designed and specified as part of the SARC 212/312 Furniture Design Course at the School of Architecture, Victoria University of Wellington. The course is coordinated by Lecturer Natasha Perkins and took place over the Summer Trimester with Metal Art Ltd. as a sponsor client. The design was further developed as part of an internship with Con-Di Interior Corporation in Taiwan, resulting in a prototype which takes into account costing and production methods. The prototype was then shipped to New Zealand and presented in the ‘Make It’ exhibition, held at the Faculty of Architecture and Design in February 2014.
